M017
Balboa M017: water flow has failed
M017 means the water flow has failed. The heater has been disabled. This wording is from Balboa guide 40985-G, 26 March 2014, for BP2500 and BP2600 with a TP800 or TP900 panel. The asterisk means the message can be reset from the panel after the problem is resolved.
There is not enough water flow through the heater to carry the heat away from the heating element and the heater has been disabled.

Do this first
-
Water level
Use the same flow checks as M016
Check low water level, suction-flow restrictions, closed valves, trapped air, too many closed jets, and pump prime. If no water leaves the jets after 2 minutes, turn the pumps off.
-
Reset
Press any button after the flow is back
The guide says that after the problem has been resolved, you must press any button to reset and begin heater start-up. Do not open the heater to press that button.
When to call a technician
Call a technician now if
- The breaker or the RCD trips when the pump is plugged in.
- You smell burning, see melted plastic, or the water is too hot to touch.
- The code comes back after one reset.
Also call for these, from the manual
- Call for service if M017 returns after the flow checks and a button reset. Leave the heater closed.
Questions
Is M017 the same message as M016?
No. M016 says flow may be low and the heater tries again after about 1 minute. M017 says there is not enough flow and the heater has been disabled, then a button press starts it again.
